thinkDesktop can be run using either “real” or “paper” (fake) money. In the paperMoney mode every user has two virtual accounts each funded with $100,000 of “play money”. Enjoy all of the same features except that the trades aren’t real and you can start over anytime you like.

NOTE: If you are reinstalling the thinkDesktop application, please make sure the application is not currently running. thinkDesktop does auto-update itself with every new release, however, so reinstallation shouldn’t be necessary.

- Click “Install thinkdesktop” to start the installation and click ‘Run’. The installer download can take anywhere from a couple of minutes to half an hour depending upon the speed of your connection.
- Once the download has completed the thinkorswim installation wizard will start automatically. Follow the instructions and click Next, Install, and Done when so prompted. Only advanced users should change any of the options from the defaults selected by the wizard.
- Once you have clicked Done, the installation process will be complete. You will now have an icon labelled thinkorswim that displays the red and white thinkorswim logo on your desktop. If you see this icon you have successfully completed the installation process.
Note: You do not need to install any other software. A Java virtual machine is included with this download.
Mac OS X Instructions:
- This installation requires OS X 10.10 or later. To ensure that you are running it, click the Apple Menu and select ‘About This Mac’.
- Click “Install thinkdesktop” to download the thinkorswim installer disk image. Once downloaded, open the disk image and click the installer application.
- Once the installation is complete, the thinkorswim icon will appear on your desktop.
NOTE: The compressed installer should be recognized by Stuffit Expander and should automatically be expanded after downloading. If it is not expanded, you can expand it manually using StuffIt Expander 6.0 or later. If you have any problems launching the installer once it has been expanded, make sure that the compressed installer was expanded using Stuffit Expander. If you continue to have problems, please contact technical support at (866)839-1100.
Linux Instructions:
- Click “Install thinkdesktop” to download the thinkorswim installer to a directory on your PC.
- After downloading open a shell and CD to the directory where you downloaded the installer.
- At the prompt type: sh ./thinkorswim_installer.sh.

Note: If you do not have a Java virtual machine installed, you may need to download one from or contact your OS manufacturer.
All Other Platform Instructions:

For Unix or Unix-like operating systems:
- For Java 2, after downloading, type java -jar launcher.jar
- For Java 1.1, after downloading, type jre -cp launcher.jar install
- If that does not work, try java -classpath [path to] classes.zip:launcher.jar install
- If that does not work either, on sh-like shells, try
- cd [to directory where launcher.jar is located]
- CLASSPATH=launcher.jar
- export CLASSPATH
- java install
- Or for csh-like shells, try
- cd [to directory where launcher.jar is located]
- setenv CLASSPATH launcher.jar
- java install
Instructions (for other platforms)
- Be sure you have Java 1.1.8 or later installed. You can download Java from Sun’s site.
- In a console window, change to the directory where you downloaded launcher.jar to before running the installer.
- Your operating system may invoke Java in a different way. To start the installer, add launcher.jar to your CLASSPATH, then start the main class of the installer named install
